Paper Abstract:
|
The Institute for Continuing Education at the Ghent University (IVPV) offers courses in the framework of Life Long
Learning. Courses include exercises, homework and projects. Through examinations/projects a certificate issued by the
Ghent University can be obtained.
Combining Life Long Learning with a full time job in an environment where accessibility to courses due to traffic
congestion is severely hindered, posed a challenge to the IVPV. Since 5 years now, the search for best practices for
offering course content is constantly continuously going on.
The success of the large scale inter-university IT1 course in 1998-2000, using live ISDN-videoconferencing, persuaded
the IVPV to organize other courses taking into account the remarks of students and industrial partners.
Taking up current best practices, a renewed course framework was set up for a new IT course (IT2) based on streaming
video lessons on CDs where participants were tightly kept into a study rhythm in order to avoid free lunch behaviour,
(guided streaming video courses). An in-house system for streaming video, with emphasis on animation and
interaction, has been developed. In 2003, the IVPV started a new type of e-learning course based on IT2 but with
maximum flexibility/freedom for participants (free streaming video courses). The search for best practices continues
Some courses are therefore given through blended learning. |
